The World's Largest e-Commerce Market

  • Over USD 500 billion in retail sales and growing.

China's e-commerce market is the largest in the world, with 2016 sales estimated to top USD 700 billion, and 2019 sales projected to exceed USD 1 trillion. On Singles' Day 2015, China's largest online shopping holiday, e-commerce sales more than doubled US Cyber Monday and Black Friday revenues.

  • Foreign brands have a strong appeal to Chinese consumers.

A 2016 McKinsey survey found the majority of higher-income Chinese shoppers prefer foreign, premium brands across all shopping categories, especially in fashion, skincare, and health products.

  • Dominated by marketplaces

In China, over 90% of retail transactions occur on marketplaces. Two of the largest marketplaces are Alibaba's Tmall platforms (which has greater than 50% market share) and JD (which has around 20% market share). Tmall is the largest B2C e-commerce platform in the world, with around 400 million active buyers.

Over the past five years, China's e-tailing industry has posted an average annual growth rate of around 40%.
